Reinventing yourself

I feel very lucky working in a small consultancy firm. We get to meet with lots of interesting people and work on a number of different projects. At the moment a lot of our clients are entrepreneurs looking to create new businesses. These people are out on the edge in relation to their comfort zones. They are taking big risks but also are learning so much.

In all service industries change is a constant. This is even more so in information technology. It can be difficult to move from a technology you are happy with to a newer technology. You can feel that you have to start all over again. This is just perception. Once you have changed technology a couple of times you start to see the patterns that underlie all technologies, and each subsequent change becomes easier.

It’s somewhat similar to the quote from the great British thriller “Croupier” – “Hold on tightly, let go lightly”. While I think this quote is meant in the context of relationships, it is still valid in a business sense. Hold on tightly to what you have, but when it is time for a change don’t let fear leave you clinging to the familiar.

It’s a great movie too!
